End of Term Projects
A colleague of mine is obsessed with project based learning. It is a great idea. Basically, you choose a real activity for the students to do and they propel their own learning in an organic fashion. We decided to do a class DVD. The students staged and filmed a series of English language music videos. It was absolutely hysterical. The only rule was that they had to speak English the whole time. They did pop version send ups of children’s rhymes and abba songs. They really put their hearts into it. The people who couldn’t sing and dance got into the other aspects of production. There was a group that worked on costumes and scenery, a film crew, and a technology team. When doing project based learning, it is important to integrate tasks where the students will practice certain hard skills. We had the students set up a business to produce and market their DVDs. They had to source bespoke packaging boxes, and then work with the company’s designers to get the packaging just right. After they had the product, they went to the local market to sell and promote them with live singing and dancing. It looked so great, I bought five to send home for presents. It was so successful, that they actually turned a profit. They had an (all English still) business meeting, where they decided to reinvest the money for a new digital camera and computer for their next production. It was such a success, everybody is looking forward to our project next term.
