Vocabulary for shoes

I was teaching a class the other day we were focusing on vocabulary and the lexical group of clothes. When we started talking about shoes, it occurred to me that we have literally hundreds of words for shoes even just within British English but including international versions of English there could be thousands. Here I am going to list some of them in groups determined by usage. Perhaps these lists can be used for some kind of vocabulary game in class, I will make some suggestions for this after the lists. You and your students will probably be able to add more to the lists..

Sports

Running shoes, trainers, plimsolls, football boots, sneakers, golf shoes, pumps, spikes.

Formal

Dress shoes, high heals, loafers, moccasins, T-strap shoes.

Work

Wellington Boots, Boots, steal toe capped boots/shoes,

Relaxing

Flip Flops, thongs, slippers, crocs,

Unusual

Cowboy-boots, clogs, clown shoes, tap shoes.

You could get pictures of these shoes and then get the students to match the pictures to the names. If you had 2 sets of pictures and words it could be done competitively in groups. Give them a few minutes to match them up and then see which group got the most right.

Or you could look at the shoes that people in the class are wearing and identify them. I like this because it make some of the vocabulary relevant to them personally which gives them a better chance of being able to recall the new words later. An extension of this could be to ask students which one of the shoes from the list they own. Again this gets students thinking about the meaning of the words and helps to remember.

There are so many fun things you could do that you could probably make a whole class just on shoes, which might be useful if you ever get ahead of your syllabus.

Well I hope this is helpful.
